What is Breast Cancer?

The term breast cancer refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. The breast is composed of two main types of tissues: glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissues. Glandular tissues house the milk-producing glands (lobules) and the ducts (the milk passages) while stromal tissues include fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast. The breast is also made up of lymphatic tissue-immune system tissue that removes cellular fluids and waste. There are several types of tumors that may develop within different areas of the breast. Most tumors are the result of benign (non-cancerous) changes within the breast….

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when it first develops, breast cancer may cause no symptoms at all. But as the cancer grows, it can cause these changes:

a lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
a change in the size or shape of the breast
discharge from the nipple
A change in the color or texture of the skin of the breast or areola (such as dimpling, puckering, or scaliness)….
Diagnosis of Breast Cancer

Treatment decisions depend on these findings. The first step in the work-up of breast disease is usually a physical exam by a doctor or nurse practitioner. Mammography and ultrasound may be important additions to the physical examination. On the basis of these evaluations, the decision may be made to confirm a clinical impression with a tissue biopsy…

Breast Cancer Symptoms For Women

She wanted to ask me about something she had read in the breast cancer magazine that she receives. Breast Cancer Symptoms For WomenAmongst the ads and informational articles about breast cancer treatment, was a recommendation that she include something called turmeric in her diet, and she wanted to know what it is and how she could most easily incorporate it into her eating plan. I was so happy to oblige her with information, since I think it may really help!

Turmeric is that bright yellow spice that gives mustard its distinctive yellow color and is used in Indian curries. It comes from the root of the Curcuma Longa plant and is sometimes called “Indian Saffron.” It is native to India and Southeast Asia, although its warm, peppery flavor is popular around the world. Although turmeric has been used for thousands of years, recently it has been added to the list of “super” foods for a variety of reasons:

Anti-inflammatory

Inflammation is your body’s response to cellular injury that, if prolonged, can lead to disease. The pigment in turmeric, which is called “curcumin,” has been shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory-and without the side effects of many drugs that are sold for this purpose. According to a study done at the University of Michigan, curcumin gets into the cells and makes them more orderly, allowing the cell membranes to have better control over substances that flow in and out of the cell and thus providing a protective effect against malignancy and infection. This has implications in the prevention of cancer, arthritis and other diseases.

Anti-oxidant

The curcumin in turmeric has anti-oxidant capabilities, which helps protect your body against the cell damage caused by free radicals. The bright yellow color of turmeric is a clue to its anti-oxidant properties, since the bright pigments in foods seem to have this protective power.

Aids liver in detoxification

Your liver works hard 24/7 to rid your body of all of the toxic substances that you inhale, ingest and produce as your body functions. There is good evidence that the curcumin found in turmeric may help the liver to detoxify certain toxic chemicals. This is significant, especially as our air, water and food become more toxic.

Cancer prevention

Due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and detoxing properties, the curcumin found in turmeric may help protect you against cancer. There is also evidence that curcumin helps the body to destroy cancer cells and thus may inhibit the growth of tumors. Studies have been done that demonstrate that those who consume turmeric regularly have a lower incidence of breast, prostate, colon and lung cancer.

Breast Cancer Gene Therapy – How Does It Work?

Scientists have begun to explore gene therapy as a potential candidate for breast cancer treatments. To give you a clue of what cancer gene therapy is, it’s basically programming cancer cells by supplying genes. The genes enter the cancerous cells and have a direct effect on changing the malign cell behaviour.

The therapeutic genes as they are called are delivered to cancerous cells via vectors (or carrier vehicles). Think of them as command delivery officers, who reprogram the bad cells. They basically deliver therapeutic healthy genes to cancerous cells. This is as close to curing the cause of the malign tumour as modern medicine can get.

However, the greatest constraint in gene therapy in general and for breast cancer as well is an optimal delivery vector. There is extensive research seeking to optimize therapeutic gene delivery to cancerous cells combined with other available therapies. It is hoped that gene therapy will limit the toxic side effects for the patient undergoing other treatments.

The future of gene therapy is limitless, but the question is what can be applied nowdays. Either when used in conjunction with another or as a sole form of treatment it can already be applied today. The success rate percentage data is hard to find from good sources, but this therapy is definitely worth of your attention. Through gene therapy it is possible to explicitly target cancerous cells in the body and attempt to destroy them. Also, gene carriers will continuously travel in the blood to search cancer cells.

Genes play a central role in the breast cancer development. Statistics show that hereditary breast cancer makes up approximately 5% to 10% of all forms. Some scientists believe that gene therapy is the most effective means of treating this type of cancer and it may have better impact than any other available treatment.

Breast Cancer Awareness Slogans

Many of the discoveries regarding curcumin and breast cancer treatment have relied on animal models and test tube studies. Breast Cancer Awareness Slogans None has yet reached clinical trial stage although a preliminary trial has been done.

Curcumin (CC) has been found to inhibit the growth of cells of cancer of the breast grown in cell cultures in the laboratory. These include hormone-dependent, hormone-independent and multidrug-resistant cells

The compound also showed anticancer activity against mouse breast tumor cells.

In female rats, CC also showed a protective effect against chemically induced mammary cancer i.e. if the animals were given it prior, they developed less malignancies.

An early clinical trial has been reported where a topical application of a CC ointment was made in seven patients with cancer of the breast. The results showed that 71% of the patients had a positive response measured as a reduction in the size of lesions, less pain, less itching and reduced exudates.

One of the challenges that needs to be overcome if curcumin and breast cancer treatment is to progress to practical use is the low absorption: very little of the compound crosses the boundary from the digestive system to the blood stream.

One solution is the concurrent use of piperine which increases absorption by 2000%.

Another is the use of enteric coating which reputable manufacturers use to ensure that nutrient-containing supplements are delivered to the upper intestine rather than be destroyed by the acidic stomach enzymes.

Although we cannot declare that a cure has been found, these are promising results regarding the future of this treatment. One can therefore recommend taking CC more as a preventative rather than a cure.

The best way to take it would be as part of a multi-nutrient supplement containing a range of other healthy components. This ensures that all the ingredients work harmoniously together to provide the best effect.

Such a supplement would also include critical components that are essential for the functioning of some nutrients so for example piperine to aid in absorption. It would also include other malignancy-protective nutrients like lycopene and resveratrol.

Now that you know a lot more about the direction that curcumin and breast cancer treatment is taking, your curiosity may have been aroused. If you would like to know more about the multi-ingredient supplement that I take that contains curcumin and helps protect against malignancy and premature aging, then please visit my website.

Breast Cancer Month Wiki

Many breast cancers are sensitive to circulating estrogen levels and for many women, suppressing the production or the effects of estrogen on the body is a major strategy in their treatment. Breast Cancer Month Wiki A lack of estrogen will produce symptoms identical to the menopause and the most unpleasant of these are hot flushes, sweats or hot flashes.

A new research project has looked at the effect of a drug called Megace or megesterol acetate in treating hot flushes in women with breast cancer.

They studied nearly three hundred patients with breast cancer who had completed surgery and chemotherapy and at least four months of tamoxifen treatment for their condition.

Before they took part in the study the women had to have experienced at least ten hot flashes of any severity or at least five severe episodes each week. When the research data was looked at, eighty five percent of the women who took part were on tamoxifen, and forty percent had more than sixty hot flushes per week. Three quarters of them had experienced sweats and flashes for more than six months before they started in the study.

The women were divided into three groups. One group were given a placebo tablet, one group got 20mg of Megace and the other received 40mg of Megace each day. They all took their medicine for three months. A good outcome was defined as completion of treatment with a seventy five percent or greater reduction in hot flushes from that womens starting point.

If the treatment they were on worked well the women were given another three months of the same medication and dose. If they did not get benefit after three months then they were given 20mg a day of Megace on top of what they were already taking.

Reduction of flushings of seventy fiver percent or more was reported in

• only 14% of those women who were on placebo medication
• 65% of those women who were on the 20 mg dose
• 48% of the women who were on the 40 mg dose of drug

In addition, most successes at three months were maintained at six months in seventy seven percent of the women on 20 mg and in eighty one percent of the women on 40 mg per day – but there was no significant impact on other menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness or joint pains.

For the women taking Megace the main side effects were fluid retention and weight gain, fatigue and sometimes mild depression.

Cures for Breast Cancer – New Light Treatment

Breast Cancer The Cure

Is there a cure for breast cancer? There is no real cure for breast cancer because the causes of this condition are not clearly known. It can affect any woman, no matter where and how she lives. Doctors are approaching the treatment by getting rid of the consequence, not the cause. The treatments are aggresive: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. That’s despite of the billions of dollars being spent on the research. However, these kinds of treatments can be very effective! Especially if used during the early stage (called Stage 1).

Light Breast Cancer Treatment Instead of Operation

This new technique to remove the cancer is the easiest for the body to take. It allows detection, targeting and killing the breast cancer cells – all just by using light. The name of the pioneer cancer surgeon who developed this treatment is Mo Keshtgar.

His treatment is known as Photodynamic Therapy PDT. It includes injecting the medicine into the body, around the tumour tissue. These chemicals make the lymph tumour tissue light sensitive. When the red laser light lights the area, only the tumour cells reproduce the light and this makes it a precise way to detect the breast cancer cells. This process also cuts the malign cell oxygen supply, killing them efficiently. This kind of targeting means the smaller part of the tissue is going to get removed, compared to breast cancer operations.

This method is a big step forward in curing the breast cancer. This kind of targeting the malign cells was unimaginable before. Experts hope to apply this method to other cancer conditions as well. This therapy is available since June 2009 in Royal Free Hospital in London.

Cancer Treatment Available Abroad At Affordable Cost –Cancer Treatment

Cancer Treatment Available Abroad

Cancer Treatment Available

Cancer is one of the most serious diseases that can afflict a person. With over 200 different types of cancer that can occur within the human body, there are numerous treatment options available. Patients who decide to go abroad for cancer treatment often have more considerations to deal with than most other types of treatments.

Some of the most common cancer treatments that can be found in India include : -

Bone Marrow Transplant : - Bone marrow is a spongy tissue found inside bones. The bone marrow in the breast bone, skull, hips, ribs and spine contains stem cells that produce the body’s blood cells.

Brachytherapy : – Brachytherapy is radiation treatment that is given inside the patient, as close to the cancer as possible. The radiation is delivered inside the body with radioactive isotopes (chemical elements), inside delivery devices such as wires, seeds, or rods. These devices are called implants.

Breast Cancer Treatment : - The term breast cancer refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. The breast is composed of two main types of tissues: glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissues.

Chemotherapy Treatment : - Chemotherapy is a general term for treatments that use chemical agents (drugs) to kill cancer cells. Many different kinds of drugs are used, either alone or in combination, to treat different cancers.

IMRT : - Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a powerful cancer-fighting technology. Annually, Mayo Clinic radiation oncologists treat more than 200 patients using IMRT.

Lung Cancer Treatment : -Lung cancer starts in the cells of the lung .The lungs are in the chest on either side of the heart. The right lung has 3components or lobes and the left lung 2 lobes. Air is inhaled through the nose and throat and flows past the voice box (larynx) into the windpipe (Trachea).

Prostate Cancer Treatment : - Prostate cancer is the leading malignancy in men over the age of 50. It is due to the abnormal proliferation of prostatic tissue cells. It is often a slow-growing cancer and remains localized at first. Later, it may extend as it spreads to nearby tissues and organs and then metastasizes to other more distant organs (lymph nodes, bones, lungs, etc.) via the bloodstream and the lymphatic system.

Radiation Therapy : - Tumors are made up of cells that are reproducing at abnormally high rates. Radiation therapy specifically acts against cells that are reproducing rapidly. Normal cells are programmed to stop reproducing (or dividing) when they come into contact with other cells.

Terramed Alliance News Younger Breast Cancer Patients Have Greater Chance Of Recurrence, Especially After Certain Treatments

Previous studies have shown that younger breast cancer patients consistently have poorer outcomes than patients who develop the disease later in life, which can translate into lower rates of overall survival. While the reason for this is not known, it is suggested that breast cancer in younger patients is more biologically aggressive.

Researchers from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston sought to determine which form of breast cancer treatment – breast-conserving therapy, mastectomy alone or mastectomy with adjuvant radiation – better benefits younger women with either Stage I or Stage II breast cancer.

A total of 652 young women with breast cancer from 1973 to 2006 were studied, with 197 of the patients having received breast-conserving therapy, 237 having received a mastectomy and 234 having received mastectomy with adjuvant radiation. The study authors confirmed that younger breast cancer patients do have relatively high locoregional recurrence rates, but that patients with Stage II disease achieved the best locoregional control rates with mastectomy plus adjuvant radiation therapy. Patients with Stage I disease had similar outcomes with breast-conserving therapy and mastectomy, but adding chemotherapy to either treatment was beneficial.

“Locoregional recurrence after optimal breast cancer treatment in young women remains a significant problem,” Beth Beadle, M.D., Ph.D., a resident at M. D. Anderson and lead author of the study, said. “Our study hopefully will help radiation oncologists plan therapies for younger breast cancer patients, who have inferior outcomes compared to older patients, and generate new interest in prospective studies to evaluate the best treatment strategies for these young women.” American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (2009). Avon Breast Cancer Merchandise

One of the most common side effects of radiation therapy to the breast (after a lumpectomy) or to the chest wall (after a mastectomy) is skin irritation. Avon Breast Cancer MerchandiseThe reaction and its extent differ for every woman. Because radiation therapy is often such an important part of breast cancer treatment, it is important to know how to mitigate its side effects in order to gain the greatest benefit from the therapy.

Coping with Skin Irritation

Radiation-induced skin reactions are more likely to occur in people who received chemotherapy shortly before or during radiation therapy and in women who have a prominent fold under the crease of the breast. In fact, this area and the underarm are the most common areas of the breast to sustain a skin reaction. Most skin reactions resolve within a few weeks of completing radiation therapy.

Skin reactions are almost inevitable for women receiving radiation to the chest wall after a mastectomy. As a result, many radiation oncology facilities give such women a one-week prophylactic break halfway through the course of treatment, to reduce the severity of skin reactions.

The severity of a skin reaction varies from person to person. It can become more noticeable as the course of treatment progresses. Faint pinkness of the skin, brisk redness, sun burnt sensation, dryness, itching, peeling, darkening like a suntan, blistering, and moist oozing can occur.

When the reaction is severe, such as a brisk redness that evolves into blistering and moist weeping of the skin, women receive a treatment break, usually lasting a week or two. This rest is usually sufficient to alleviate the worst symptoms. When necessary, doctors can prescribe therapeutic creams. Radiation can be resumed once the reaction resolves.

During radiation therapy, women can avoid chafing the irradiated skin by going braless or by wearing a cotton sports bra without an underwire that fits well below the crease of the breast or the irradiated skin of the chest wall. Women who can go braless altogether, should. If that is not a comfortable solution, women should wear a bra as infrequently as possible to reduce the likelihood and/or the degree of a skin reaction. Also, aerating the irradiated skin helps minimize skin reactions.

Over-the-counter moisturizing creams without alcohol and fragrance can reduce the extent of a skin reaction. Often, radiation oncology teams prescribe these creams at the beginning of radiation therapy.

Women should also try to be kind to the irradiated skin, which can be easily inflamed. Radiation oncologists suggest:
